STAGE 7: FRAUD SQUAD I

My stress level was sky-high: wars with Management; deceased spouse; single parent of three; kids hitting puberty. I tried a "killer" move in May 1995, but that collapsed before it hit.

"We need more weight" Mr. Darrah said. Right; we were like a mosquito with a kryptonite bite. So I looked for some heavy duty help.

About this time, Susan Eng, well-known activist and lawyer, finished her term as Chair of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Services Board… an ideal candidate. I sent her a letter, requesting help. Susan Eng was not interested, and passed my letter to her replacement at the Police Services Board, Maureen Prinsloo, who wanted the Fraud Squad to investigate. I was very against a police investigation since it could do a huge amount of damage … I still had hopes of resolving the case quietly (no comment!). For right or for wrong, I asked the police not to investigate. Maureen Prinsloo wasn’t very impressed, and basically told me it was the Police’s right to investigate or not.

The Police did investigate, but apparently only went to Ontario Hydro Head Office. They never talked to me, and called the investigation over with a letter. Interestingly, they commented that the Arthur Anderson report didn’t support any of my allegations (even though AA had been given a "one step short of the line" case). Sounded to me that somebody wasn’t playing straight again. My lawyer’s comment: "So? Maybe they slipped them (Arthur Anderson) a few bucks. There’s graft everywhere." documents/fraud_Squad_1.gif

Some weeks later, Maurice Strong announced he would be leaving Ontario Hydro in a month or two.
