STAGE 6: POWER WORKERS UNION HELPS

The PWU had been unofficially involved in the case since late 1992 through Janet. Partially because of my domestic situation, the OHT PWU rep managed to get me a meeting with John Murphy, PWU President. The PWU is a much stronger union than the Society, and takes a more activist stand. If Hydro-gate had been backed by the PWU, this case would probably have been resolved years ago.

John Murphy was not surprised to hear the story, and immediately decided to approach Maurice Strong directly, and maybe go to the Ontario Hydro Board of Director’s Audit Committee. John wrote to Maurice Strong. PWU

Maurice Strong wrote back almost immediately, turning down the request. The last paragraph of the memo was particularly disturbing since AA presumably presented a criminal fraud case that was "one step short of criminal fraud", yet Maurice Strong was totally supporting Management and rejecting all the evidence. (Janet, then the PWU rep told me about the memo, and gave it to me as it came off the fax. The original is presumably still in the PWU files. I have every reason to believe this memo is genuine.) MAURICE STRONG 4

From my perspective, this was a complete stalemate and disaster. Going to the Fraud Squad would (or could) result in the departure of almost everybody in Ontario Hydro Management, which would be disastrous for the Corporation.

With PWU input, I wrote Maurice Strong a one page summary of the case. He never replied. MAURICE STRONG 5
